Don enlisted in the United States Navy after Pearl Harbor was attacked and served for one year in the Pacific. He was in a battle-area hospital for a while but later taught gunnery school at the Armed Guard Center in California then at the gunnery school in Seattle, Washington. He also studied at the advanced gunnery school in Washington, DC. He attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. |
