What is a Mail List?
A mail list (or mailing list) is a computerized system, usually automated, which allows a person to send e-mail
messages to one e-mail address where the messages are then copied and sent to everyone who has subscribed to the
mailing list. If any of the recipients respond to a message, that message is also copied and distributed to all
mail list members. Most mailing lists are dedicated to a specific topic of interest.
Generally speaking, there are two types of mail lists:
|
Mail List
|
Any time a question or response is submitted to the mail list, that message is immediately forwarded to all
list members. For extremely active mail lists dozens of e-mails could be sent and received on a daily basis.
|
|
Digest
|
In the digest mode, a mail list server archives all messages sent to the list, bundles them together into one
e-mail and then sends the message to the lists' subscribers. The mail list can be setup to send this digest
of messages either at specific time intervals or when the accumulated messages reach a certain size.
|
Subscribing to the digest mode is only necessary for mail lists which may receive dozens of messages every day. For
most mail lists, subscribing to the normal Mail List mode is sufficient but, if activity picks up, you can easily
unsubscribe and then subscribe to the digest mode.
How to Subscribe
To subscribe to a mailing list just click on the "L Single Posts" button or, to subscribe to the Digest, just click
on the "D Digests" button. In either case, your computer should open your e-mail software and generate an e-mail
with the word "subscribe". Press "Send" to complete the subscription process.
If the buttons don't work, you can subscribe manually by sending an e-mail with the word "subscribe" in the e-mail
subject area to the mail address "request" address. To unsubscribe, the word "unsubscribe" is entered into the e-mail's
subject and/or message body. The following mailing list links will direct you to more detailed instructions on how
to subscribe, unsubscribe or send messages to the specific mailing lists.
